The Supreme Court of Brazil has a 1st hearing on the coup charges of the former president.

The Supreme Court of Brazil decided to first hear on Tuesday to decide whether former President Jair Bolsonaro and some of his assistants would have attempted a coup after the 2022 election defeat.

If accepted, Bolsonaro and seven other seven people would be tried for alleged conspiracy to overthrow the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula.

The first room of the Supreme Court reviewed the charges against prosecutors against the “important core of the conspirators.

The “core” consists of Bolsonaro and seven people among the 33 suspects existing. Among the defendants are Bolsonaro’s Defense Minister, an army Walter Braga Netto and Bolsonaro’s personal assistant Mauro Cour.

All of them are accused of creating an armed punishment organization, violently eliminating the democratic rule of law, committing a coup, damaging violence, and serious threats against public property.

The complaint against Bolsonaro and its collaborators in February this year accuses the former president of making a plan to reverse the results of the 2022 Presidential elections won by Lula.

According to the arguments presented by the prosecutor Paulo Gonet on Tuesday, Bolsonaro claims that it was designed at the beginning of the coup attempt, which was designed in the beginning of July 2021 and carried out by supporters, including attacks on 8 January 2023, through violence by Bolsonaro.

The defense of Bolsonaro, represented by lawyer Celso Villardi, argued that there was no definite evidence to determine the former president as an intellectual writer of the coup or the provocative of violent attacks on January 8th.

Vilandi did not deny the existence of a conspiracy against Lula, but claimed that Bolsonaro was not aware of the prosecution of the former president’s information about the coup.

Defense also emphasized that Bolsonaro’s alleged prosecution, which was allegedly involved in criminal participation, was not provided. They argued that the Federal police chose parts of conversations implying Bolsonaro selectively.

On Wednesday, an official decision is expected to be officially collected.
