New West police warn of pickpockets at local businesses

Pickpockets are breaking into service-oriented businesses in New West and stealing items from coat racks and jacket pockets.

New Westminster police are warning businesses and residents about the potential for pickpocketing.

The warning concerns pickpocketing incidents involving jackets placed on coat racks near the entrance of service-based businesses, including hair and nail salons.

According to information received from the police department, the suspects entered a workplace where jackets were placed on coat racks near the entrance and searched customers’ jacket pockets for items such as wallets and phones.

“Now that we are entering coat season, we encourage businesses to consider moving their coat racks further into their facilities,” said NWPD Sgt. Andrew Leaver said in a press release. “We would also like to remind residents to keep valuables with them rather than leaving them in their coat pockets.”

The New Westminster Police Department recommends businesses train their staff on this tactic and remain alert for suspicious activity.

Staff at local businesses are encouraged to report thefts by calling 604-525-5411 or 911 if they witness a theft.
