PGA Tour star makes interesting claims about players’ wives as event chiefs ‘take action’ | golf | Sport

PGA Tour star Michael Kim has claimed that wives of golf stars have a big say in which tournaments their husbands play in. In the controversial claim, the American player claimed that some of his rivals would choose events according to the ‘influence’ of their partners.

Fans often wonder how players decide which tournaments they want to play in. This usually happens by deciding on their favorite course and taking into account their past performance.

Local culture and major landmarks can also play a role in stars deciding where they want to play. But Kim insists it can sometimes be as simple as players being influenced by their spouses and families.

He also claimed that some tournaments were taking action to make their events attractive to players’ families. This could help them convince golf’s top brass to play.

“Players choose which tournament to play in based on a variety of factors,” Kim wrote to X. “Course, track record, city, environment, etc. are all pretty mundane things.

“But one thing that’s not so obvious is that spouses can have a big impact. Some spouses tell the player that he needs to add a particular tournament to the schedule, whether he likes the venue or not hahaha.”

He added: “Knowledgeable tournament managers ensure the partners are really well looked after with events and activities to make the tournament attractive not only for the players but for everyone in the family.

A fan asked Kim which tournaments do the best job of making their events inclusive for players’ families. The 31-year-old World Tech Championship in Mexico, the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles, and the Procore Championship all seemingly live up to expectations.

He replied: “Generally the world-class tech hub in Cabo (formerly Cancun) does a great job with family-oriented activities. The LA tournament, Napa all do a great job. That’s changed over the years as tournament directors and sponsors have changed.”
