Treasury must compensate Scotland for tax hike – Shona Robison

Robison told BBC Radio’s Good Morning Scotland that the tax increase could cost the Scottish government up to £500 million.

“As the Scottish public sector is larger, we need to see this fully covered,” he added.

“We will seek immediate clarity on this matter.”

Around 600,000 people are employed in Scotland’s public sector, accounting for 22% of the total workforce; this rate is around 17% in the UK as a whole.

This has raised concerns in Holyrood that Scotland could be short-changed if compensation for the National Insurance increase is not commensurate with the public sector.

Reeves was previously asked about concerns that a tax increase could cost the Scottish government £500 million.
