Former county commissioner faces child sex charges in Angelina County

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – A former Angelina County commissioner serving prison time on domestic abuse charges in Polk County and facing child sexual assault charges is now preparing for a trial in Angelina County.

Robert Garrison, 56, of Diboll Cheshire, is charged with four counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child and one count of indecency with a child. Cheshire, a former county commissioner, was last booked into the Angelina County Jail on Aug. 22. He appeared in Angelina County Judge Todd Kassaw’s court on Thursday for a preliminary hearing.

Cheshire has been serving time since 2019 for persistent violence against a family member and was arrested in 2022 on a Polk County warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Cheshire’s next jury selection is scheduled for Monday.

First Assistant San Jacinto District Attorney Rob Freyer spoke to KTRE following Cheshire’s preliminary hearing regarding the details of the case. Freyer is prosecuting the case after the Angelina County District Attorney recused himself.
