Apple may produce in-house Wi-Fi chips for iPhone 17: What does this mean for users?

Apple is trying to produce its own wireless chips to add to the smartphone universe. After the leak Apple’s 5G modem in the iPhone SE 4The latest rumor suggested that the iPhone 17 will bring in-house Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in his post on X that Apple plans to switch to its own Wi-Fi chips from Broadcom. He also said that the tech giant expects to move nearly all of its products to these Wi-Fi chips in about three years, starting with the iPhone 17. The expectation is that the iPhone 17 will arrive in town in September 2025. Fi chips may also hit the market in the same year.

Additionally, Kuo noted that in-house chips will help reduce the cost of products. Apple developing its own chips could also improve software integration, but the company already operates within a tightly controlled ecosystem with strong restrictions. Due to ongoing demands for better repairability, custom chips may not be compatible with fans’ desires.

According to Kuo, this new Wi-Fi chip will be produced using the N7 process, which is an advanced version of the technology used in the production of the A13 Bionic chip. Moreover, it will also support the latest Wi-Fi 7 specification used in the iPhone 16 series.

If Apple’s first in-house chips debut only in the iPhone 17 Pro, they will likely expand to the full iPhone 18 series later as well. With the growth of Apple Intelligence, the need for faster speeds and more reliable connections is more pressing than ever.

Previously, Apple acquired Intel’s modem division in 2019 in order to eliminate dependence on Qualcomm modems. However, various reports indicate that Apple’s prototype modems encountered many technical problems and glitches.

iPhone 17: All leaked features

At the heart of the iPhone 17 series will be Apple’s new A19 chip; This chip will be the successor to the A18 chip, which is expected to be released with this year’s iPhone 16 series. Speculation is rife that this A19 chip will be produced using a 2-nanometer process by TSMC, the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturer. It is said that this new chip will bring improvements in performance, energy efficiency and thermal management. Besides the A19, the iPhone 17 Pro models are also expected to see a memory upgrade, with reports suggesting a jump to 12GB RAM.

Apple is also reportedly planning to introduce a new type of motherboard in the iPhone 17. This motherboard is said to be developed using Resin Coated Copper (RCC) technology.

The display technology on the iPhone 17 is also expected to see changes. Reports suggest that with the iPhone 17, the screens of Apple’s flagship phone may become more scratch-resistant and could potentially include a new type of glass developed by Corning. There are also rumors that Apple may expand the always-on display feature, which is currently exclusive to the Pro models, to the entire iPhone 17 series.
