Outreach aimed at helping children with luggage or treats

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan – It’s Halloween night, which means many families are spending part of the evening trick-or-treating, or in this case, tailgating.

The Save a Life a Day Outreach hosted a tailgate or treat event as it aims to provide a Path Forward to a safe haven for children and young adults in the area. Their goal: To give kids the opportunity to dress up and celebrate Halloween in situations where they wouldn’t normally be able to.

According to Jasmine Cummings, co-founder of Save a Life a Day Outreach, this trunk or treat is designed to meet kids where they are. “Those tough years where you’re trying to figure everything out, we want to give those tools or put them in the developmental places they need to be successful,” Cummings said.

Donshay Lewis, who participated in the Save a Life in a Day Outreach, was one of the children he now hopes to help. “We’re basically out here giving out candy to kids, trying to stop gun violence,” Lewis said.

Lewis is the father of four young sons and has big dreams for all of them. “I want my boys to go to school, graduate, go to college and do something with their lives,” Lewis said.

Lewis wants to see other young people in the community succeed. “As a father, I like to see kids out in the community. I like to see them do good,” Lewis said.

The first step to seeing them do good is to let these kids be kids on Halloween night, which means handing out as much candy as possible!

Holiday festivities don’t end with Halloween. On December 20, the Save a Life in a Day Outreach is holding its 10th annual Christmas event at Gerald R. Ford Middle School.
