State approves NSD outreach center plan in capital

Bhubaneswar: State government approves proposal to set up a welfare center National School of Drama (NSD) in Bhubaneswar to promote and expand Odia theater. Initially, the center will operate from a temporary location at the Guru Kelu Charan Mohapatra Odissi Research Center here.
Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj said this development represents a significant achievement OdishaIt offers valuable opportunities to students who are interested in theater and acting. The minister said the NSD outreach center will contribute significantly to the development of Odia theater and help showcase regional stories and traditional performances at the national and international levels.

The establishment of the outreach center came about as a result of discussions between chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi and culture minister Suraj. Highlighting the cultural importance, the minister said theater plays a vital role in preserving and transmitting Odisha’s cultural heritage, historical narratives, artistic expressions and literary traditions across generations. “The establishment of the (NSD) outreach facility will encourage and enhance the development of Odia language theater productions,” he added.
He also said that the outreach center will offer high quality education and enable students to represent Odisha at national and international platforms through theater performances. “The new outreach center in Odisha aims to promote Odia culture, with particular focus on theater heritage,” he added.
NSD alumnus and experienced theater personality Surya Mohanty said that the government’s decision to set up an outreach center for NSD is a welcome step. Another actor, Manoj Pattanayak, welcomed the decision and said that all the necessary support should be given for the growth of the center.
Founded in Delhi in 1959, NSD has been operating independently under the ministry of culture since 1975. While actor Paresh Rawal is the chairman of NSD, famous Odisha native actor Chittaranjan Tripathy is also its director. Many eminent actors from Odisha, including Bijay Mohanty and Ajit Das, have graduated from NSD. NSD has centers in Sikkim, Bengaluru and Varanasi. It also has a Theater in Education (TIE) wing in Agartala, Tripura.
