Jared Leto, John Mulaney and Lupita Nyong’o to Star in ‘Lunik Heist’

Jared Leto, John Mulaney and Lupita Nyong’o sign on to star Lunik RobberyA dramatic heist directed by Kemp Powers Projector PicturesThe Disney-owned division said in a statement Friday.

The script, written by Powers, is inspired by the true story of the American government’s plan to steal a Soviet spacecraft during an expo in Mexico City in 1959. The script is based on an article by Jeff Maysh published in 2014. MIT Technology Review.

The events saw the CIA, wanting to learn about the Soviets’ scientific capabilities, capture a space probe and escape with it, investigating its secrets and bringing it back without the other party knowing what it was. The robbery remained a secret until it was declassified in 2019.

Leto and Emma Ludbrook produce under the Paradox banner with Mark Johnson for Gran Via Productions. Maysh will serve as executive producer.

In announcing the project, Searchlight Pictures president Matthew Greenfield praised the “extraordinary talents of Jared, Lupita and John” and “the visionary Kemp”: Lunik Robbery “A wild, bumpy ride full of tricks and unlikely heroes.”

Development director Zahra Phillips will oversee the project for Searchlight Pictures and report to president of production and development DanTram Nguyen.

The actors behind the project have numerous figurines and frameable certificates among them.

Powers has previously worked as a director on acclaimed animated films. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and Pixar SoulWinner of the best animated Oscar of 2021. One Night in Miami…In 2013, he adapted the play of the same name and was nominated for an Oscar for best adapted screenplay.
