“These stats and statistics are being manipulated. The biggest reason is that less than half of police departments actually report level one crimes,” Alexandrow said.

A 2023 White House report states that “as of January 1, 2023, only 67% of law enforcement agencies were submitting crime data to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS).”

The FBI also recently updated its 2022 crime statistics to show the increase in crime that year. “With the actions of people who want to marginalize and minimize the police presence, that’s exactly what you get,” Alexandrow said. “And when there are people who want to film the police all the time… when there are people who want to fire them for doing their job, for doing the best they can, who wants to do that job? After all, who suffers for it? Well, women in Nashville, people in Nashville, Nashville Businesses in.”

He continued: “You’re asking (the police) to do a thankless job and you’re persecuting them and in some cases you’re prosecuting them for doing their job and then you’re upset about the increase in crime. This conflict is an oxymoron.”

In cities like Nashville, overcrowding in jails has become a problem that affects how and when some criminals are released, Alexandrow said.

“The only misnomer about prison is that it rehabilitates people, but it doesn’t. It just makes you better at your craft,” the 26-year MNPD officer said. “…There’s no room in prisons. Then they decide this person is less violent than this person. So let’s release them and put them on double secret probation. I hope they become good people. But we already know that’s not true.”
