6 vehicle thefts were reported in Staten Island between October 21-27: Here it is

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Six vehicle thefts were reported on Staten Island during the week of October 21-27.

Overall, the number of auto thefts reported in the county through Oct. 27 was down 24% (289 vs. 380) compared to the same period in 2023. NYPD’s latest CompStat figures.

The database shows six cars were reported stolen on Staten Island between Oct. 21 and 27, the most recent week for which statistics are available.

Here’s a look at those events:

— A carjacking was reported at 11 a.m. Oct. 21 at Bement and Castleton streets in West Brighton.

— A carjacking occurred at 5 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the intersection of Poland Place and Todt Hill Road in Castleton Corners.

— A grand theft auto was reported at 8 a.m. Oct. 24 at the intersection of Richmond Terrace and Heberton Avenue in Port Richmond.

— A car theft was reported at 2 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Lafayette Boulevard and Van Buren Street in New Brighton.

— A carjacking occurred at 9 a.m. Oct. 27 at the intersection of Houston Street and Houston Lane in Graniteville.

— A car theft was reported at 7 p.m. the same day at Burgher Boulevard and Adele Street in Dongan Hills.

The dramatic shift in NYPD strategy after a spike in Staten Island in 2023 has resulted in less crime overall. The NYPD enacted a tactical change in late summer 2023, developing a complex, multi-state system to gather and analyze intelligence as a strategy to thwart car thefts and robberies specifically. Deputy Chief Joseph Gulotta, former NYPD Staten Island borough commander, said in an interview with Advance/SILive.com last December.
