Ghanaian pollster Ben Ephson, Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Dispatch newspaper, gave information on why his prediction for the 2024 general elections did not hit the target.

While speaking on Joy News on December 12, 2024, he misstepped on voter apathy within the new Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, the low turnout among NPP supporters was difficult to detect during pre-election polls.

“I have conducted 8 surveys in the last 23 years; I missed 2 of them. Now, in both cases, like this one, it’s hard to know the irrelevance. If you look at 2020 and 2024, the numbers achieved by the NDC were almost the same. NPP’s numbers dropped by nearly 30%.

“Using the Ashanti Region, which is considered as the stronghold of the NPP, he emphasized that the votes received by the NPP in 2020 have fallen by over 1.2 million in 2024 in Ashanti alone. That’s the problem with voting. It is difficult to indicate disinterest. The same thing happened in 2016.”

“She (Hillary Clinton) opened fire on Black people while campaigning for the Democratic nomination with Obama. That’s why they refused to participate when he became the Democratic nominee. That’s one of the problems with voting. You can’t be complacent that people won’t participate, Myjoyonline.com was quoted as saying during the interview.

Ephson emphasized that voter apathy remains one of the biggest challenges to polling accuracy.

In 2016, he predicted that the NDC would win but it failed.

He also predicted a victory in favor of the New Patriotic Party before the 2024 elections, but this also failed.
